Mind and People First, Matter Last
When you have a busy week at work it helps when you surround yourself with good people who have the power to uplift you during your busy times and remind you to do the next right thing. As I’ve written about before, my yoga instructors and fellow yogis do this for me a lot, and helped on Monday night, but it’s the people I know through my special meetings and coffee when we can that remind me of things that are calming and wonderful.
Without further ado, today’s offering is from Rumi, (Mawlānā Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Balkhī, a 13th-century Persian everything. He was a poet, “mystic” theologian, and jurist. He was, above all else a man of letters who lived in a time where empires came and went. He’s a symbol of the shifting, contested and still heated boundaries of the Asian and Middle Eastern places he lived in and why, in the end, I believe poets can change the world. Rumi was open minded and cared more about wisdom than politics; cared more for human welfare over religion and for me, is a reminder of mindset over matter. I love the idea that being human means you have to open yourlsef up, become an inn, let other people in...
The Guest House
By Rumi (Translated by Coleman Barks)
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whomever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
